Terrace & Pergola: spring cleaning

30 March 2020

Blue skies brighten our days. Spring is here. It’s time to give your terrace a thorough cleaning so you can enjoy it to the full. So get out your gloves, brushes and detergents to give your terrace and pergola a shine.

Clean up your terrace

Deserted during the cold winter days, the terrace has accumulated dirt, mold, dead leaves, … At the start of spring, it’s time for a thorough cleaning and maintenance of your terrace, so you can make the most of the sunny days ahead.

With a little elbow grease and a good cleaner, your terrace will be back in shape in no time.

Step 1: Clean the deck covering

Spring cleaning starts with the terrace floor. If a good sweep and soapy water aren’t enough, a floor renovator can restore the terrace to its former glory. In this way, mosses, lichens and the like are effectively eliminated.

However, avoid high-pressure cleaning, as this type of cleaning damages mineral surfaces, wooden surfaces, joints, ….

On wood or composite coverings, don’ t forget to apply a protector. This preserves the color of the wood for longer, and also prevents stains from sinking into the wood too quickly.

Step 2: Clean the pergola

Once the terrace floor is as good as new. Now it’s time to clean the pergola.

Like the terrace floor, the terrace cover has also endured a harsh winter and just needs a thorough cleaning to welcome the fine weather.
To maintain your aluminum pergola, it’s a good idea to wash it twice a year, in early spring and autumn.

To remove dirt, dust, pollen traces, etc., soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth will suffice. Dry your pergola with a cloth and it will be as good as new.

During this big clean-up, it’s important to take a look at the gutters to make sure they’re not clogged with leaves or anything else.

Step 3: A new look for your pergola

Once the ground and pergola have been thoroughly cleaned and scrubbed, it’s time to bring out the garden furniture and decorate the terrace.

Cleaning patio and pergola furniture

The terrace and the pergola represent an integral part of your outdoor space. A space that needs to be designed to be pleasant and convivial. Depending on your style and tastes, decorate this space to suit you and make you want to enjoy the sunny days ahead.

Take out your garden furniture and give it a thorough cleaning. For a touch of novelty, consider changing the color of the cushions or repainting the wooden table. A few small changes can give your garden furniture a boost!

A little decoration to finish it off in style

Once the floor, pergola and furniture have been refurbished, it’s time to think about a few decorating tricks to enhance your exterior even further.

Under your pergola, place a few flower pots of different sizes on the sides of the pergola and on your table. You can also grow a climbing plant on the pergola profiles for an urban jungle feel. This will bring a touch of color and cheerfulness.

Hang a few lamps, bulbs, Chinese baubles or string lights from the roof of your pergola to bring in the light.

To give your pergola a vacation feel and achieve greater privacy, you can add curtains to the sides of your pergola. A few cushions will make your pergola even more comfortable. Dare to use rugs under the pergola for a cosy, comfortable effect!
